Answers and help, all in one place

Caring for someone you love means juggling more than care. Here are answers to the questions we hear most, and trusted, free public resources for Maine seniors, adults with disabilities and the families who support them.

Common questions

Does the Maximus assessment cost anything?

No. The state's assessment is free and confidential.

Can a family member be the paid caregiver?

In many cases, yes, through our Family Caregiver program. Every situation is different, so give us a call and we'll walk through it with you.

What if we don't qualify for MaineCare?

State-funded Section 63 may help, and private pay is always an option. We'll help you compare.

We already have a MaineCare plan with another agency. Can we switch?

Yes. You have the right to choose your provider. We'll listen to what hasn't been working and coordinate with your care coordinator to make the change as smooth as possible.

How soon can care start?

Private-pay care can often start quickly once we've met with you. MaineCare and state-funded care start once your plan is authorized. Call us and we'll give you a realistic timeline.

Program descriptions are a plain-language guide only. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services makes all eligibility decisions.
